In the year 1991 the department was declared as a "Centre for Special Assistance" by the UGC.

In the year 1994 the department was provided with a centre for "Nehru Studies" for which the approval of the State Govt. is awaiting.

Before final M.A. Examinations students have to make compulsorily a comprehensive survey of a village separately. They prepare their respective reports on that basis under the guidance of the teachers of the Department. In their report they identify the socio-economic problems facing the village. They formulate a project to solve these problems. The report so prepared is being Village contact – cum – Survey Camp. Besides, it is compulsory for each student to attend a Village Contact-cum-survey camp based on constructive programme organized under the auspices of the Department.
